NOMEN NUDUM

Newsletter of the Australasian Palaeontologists

Nomen nudum is the annual newsletter of the Australasian Palaeontologists (AP). It is published to acquaint members with the activities of palaeontological colleagues and with any other items of current interest. Enquiries and contributions should be directed to the editor.

Opinions expressed in the Nomen nudum newsletter are those of individual contributors and do not necessarily reflect the views of Australasian Palaeontologists nor the Geological Society of Australia, Inc. Mention of a product or service should not be construed as constituting endorsement by either body.

TO ALL PALAEONTOLOGISTS WORKING ON AUSTRALIAN, NEW ZEALAND AND PAPUA NEW GUINEA MATERIAL
It is again time to request research reports for the next issue (Number 44, 2025) of Nomen Nudum, the annual newsletter of the Australasian Palaeontologists (as the Specialist Group is now known).

The deadline for your contribution is Friday 28th February 2025.

It is important to note that you do not have to be an AP member to contribute.

If you know of anyone (e.g. new students, volunteers or enthusiast) who might not be on the mailing list for Nomen Nudum, please feel free to forward this message and encourage them to contribute a summary of their contact details, research activities, and any publications. Some universities, museums and government departments (such as Deakin, Flinders, UNE and GNS NZ) send in their reports via a coordinator.

Nomen Nudum will be distributed via email at the start of the following year (around March) and will be achieved on the AP webpage.

In 2024 we are doing things a little differently. Instead of submitting an “old school” word document to the editor, we are encouraging everyone to visit the online submission site which can be accessed via the link below. The site will also accept institutional group contributions (as well as individual reports), so all submission can be made using this portal:

https://forms.office.com/r/c1w7AEtNuP

If you find the online portal too confusing or difficult, we will also continue to accept contributions as a Word file sent to the editor. However, please make sure you follow the previous 2023 year guidelines, otherwise your contribution may not be included in the final contribution. The text should be in Times New Roman, 12 pt font with headings in bold and Journal names in italics.

Make sure you consider submitting a photo and/or illustration of your research or fieldwork as this will add immensely the finish newsletter. The best image will also receive a coveted spot on the newsletters front cover and be feature heavily on the specialist groups website! To submit your images, please send them to the editor directly (Patrick.Smith@australian.museum) as the online submission portal does not allow for image upload directly. Additionally, make sure figures are either high quality JPEGs or minimally compressed TIFFs ONLY.

When reporting on publications in the online submission portal, we would highly recommend following the template given below. Failure to do so may mean your publications will not be featured in this year’s newsletter.

Publications (published, or in press only please).

Zhen, Y.-Y., Percival, I.G., Simes, J.E., Cooper, R.A. & Wright, A.J. 2009. Darriwilian (Middle Ordovician) conodonts from Thompson Creek, Northwest Nelson, New Zealand. Memoirs of the Association of Australasian Palaeontologists 37, 27-53.

As always, feel free to contribute any other news items (e.g. discussion on some issue being debated, upcoming scientific events & conferences, projects, bibliographic comments, obituaries etc.). There is a space on the last screen of the online submission portal.
